On every trip I have made to Iraq and Afghanistan, I would shoot pictures through the window of a Humvee and I called the series Humvee TV. With every trip though Humvee rides become less and less frequent as they are replaced by other vehicles, such as the MRAP. So this past trip I only had the opportunity to ride in a Humvee once and that was while getting around FOB Thunder/Lighting in Gardez. So chances are next time I make a trip to Iraq or Afghanistan I won't be riding in a Humvee. So here is a few from that ride. 14-Hour Humvee Ride
During one of my days in Iraq I had the pain of taking about a 14-hour convoy trip from Camp Anaconda, north of Baghdad, to Tallil Airbase in Southern Iraq. Not the most exciting ride in the world since I was crammed in the back seat of a Humvee, at least this time I wasn't occupying the seat with the gas tank directly below it.
There isn't a whole hell of a lot you can shoot from the back seat of Humvee, except some Humvee TV pics, but I have already posted a few of those. Here is what you can get from a 14-hour convoy ride.
The ride broke me off pretty good and my knees were killing for days after that. I'm not sure how these guys do it day after day.

Humvee TV: Afghanistan
The paratroopers in Afghanistan travel in the same armored Humvees as the soldiers in Iraq.
The doors are heavy and resemble vault doors. The windows are several inches thick and are never open. The Humvees, especially in Iraq, are a little bubble of safety. A place where the troopers can shut out the danger. But the feeling is different in Afghanistan. While there is a roadside bomb threat here, when you finally open the heavy door of the Humvee you don't have that same sense of foreboding. It doesn't feel like you are exposing yourself as much.
Maybe it is the picturesque mountains or the desolate patches of gravel desert between the villages instead of the garbage choked streets of Baghdad. It could be the happy greetings of the children and men when you roll into a village instead of the sideways glances or the downright hateful looks we got in the Bayji market in February.
Either way, Afghanistan really has a different vibe.
