IED Dogs

A couple weeks ago a spent the day photographing, Labrador retrievers training with Marines for an upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. The dogs are trained to sniff out explosives used in IEDs. Most of these dogs have been deployed to Afghanistan more times than the Marines they are training with.

Hello! my name is Deborah Lee and i'm a photojournalism student at Biola University. I've chosen your blog to follow for one of my classes because i've looked through your previous work and admire a lot of what you do! As i came to your blog, i was pleasantly surprised to find these photos and was impressed to feel emotions for the soldiers and the dogs! The interactions you captured with the dog and the soldiers were real and very sweet!

my favorites include the 4th picture. I love the side angle and how you can see other soldiers with their dogs, but that the focus is on the soldier in front with the black lab. It's really beautiful. I love the dark feels of the weather and atmosphere. I also love the wide angle shot of the soldier and the dog on the road. It is the 7th photo down. The lines on the roads and the line of trees in the back make it so aesthetically pleasing. and lastly, the photo with the dog running towards the camera with the toy in his mouth. That one is such a feel-good photo. There is so much joy in that dog's face.

Thank you for taking amazing photos. I will be back to look at more of your work soon.

Deborah,

Thanks so much for choosing to follow my blog and your kind comments about my photos.

I grew up out your way in California. I was born in Anaheim and raised in Rialto. I miss it sometimes but I don't miss the traffic.

I hope you are having a good time as pj student. Some of my fondest memories come from my days as a pj student.

Who teaches the program at Biola?

Remember to work your tail off as a student. It is one of the few times in your career that you can work on any story you want.

Also if you ever want me to take a look at some of your work just shoot me an email.

Take care.

yeah. the traffic is horrible! but hey! i'm glad we can find something relatable. It's amazing to see someone come out of an area nearby and make it as an amazing photojournalist in the world!

being a pj student is def. fun, but as a junior getting ready to be a senior, and then getting ready to graduate, anxiety seems to be something that consumes me nowadays. Where i'll be after school is such a hazy vision.

Dr. Michael Longinow is the head of our journalism department and the head of the visual emphasis is Prof. Tamara Welter. Both 2 amazing professors with a passion for teaching journalism.

right now, i'm doing a lot of wedding/engagement work because that is where i intern, but i do want to do more photojournalistic work later on. my photoblog is thephotosishoot.tumblr.com but i don't update it as often as i should. It would be great to get some feedback!

I've been waiting for some more of your work, and will patiently be waiting. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to be in contact with you and learn from your photos!
